Michelin 2001 – the changes
Gordon Ramsay learnt that he had finally won his third star at about midnight last night after dinner at his London restaurant with the guide's editors.
He was said to be absolutely delighted at finally gaining the award. Many had tipped him to move up from two to three stars in last year's guide.
At the Capital hotel, head chef Eric Chavot achieved his second star after nearly two years in the job. The award comes in the Capital's 30th anniversary year.
John Burton-Race, who picked up two stars for his new restaurant at the Landmark hotel in London, previously held the same number at his L'Ortolan restaurant in Reading.
Star gains for Tamarind and Zaika, both in London, underline Britain's status as one of the leading centres of Indian cooking in Europe.
And the award of one star to the Stagg Inn in Herefordshire - the first Michelin star awarded to a pub - reflects the vast improvement in pub food in the UK in recent years.
Overall, the UK and Ireland gained one new three-star restaurant, moving from one to two establishments at that level. There was just one new two-star restaurant, Thornton's in Dublin, taking the total to 13.
The overall number of one-starred restaurants increased by two to 88, while the number boasting Bib Gourmand awards for "good food at moderate prices" also increased by two to126.
The Red Guide Great Britain and Ireland 2001 is published tomorrow priced £14.25.
