Microwave breakthrough

Microwave breakthrough

Freshbake Foods can now offer pastry that stays crisp and firm when baked off from frozen in a standard microwave oven, thanks to a new development in packaging. Before being reheated in the microwave, a tab on the front of the box is pulled, which causes the lid to fall on top of the crust.

Aluminium foil built into the base and lid of the carton prevent the telltale sogginess of pastry heated up in a microwave.

The pastry itself has been specially formulated, with shortcrust on the base and puff on the lid.

Two savoury versions are available: roast chicken, with a 21% meat content, and steak pie, with a 23% meat content.

Freshbake sees huge potential for the product in areas such as foodcourts, travel and roadside 24-hour catering services, vending and self-service outlets.

Not least among its advantages is the fact that the pastry can be held in chill rather than kept warm over long periods, which cuts on hygiene risks.

The price is 85p each.
