Millennium drinks stop at 1.30am in Ireland

Ireland's amendment to its licensing hours for Millennium Eve will have little impact because most restaurants and bars will close for the night.

The serving of alcohol must stop at 1.30am on the night, the government has ruled.

A decision to allow all-night drinking was reversed after concerns were raised by senior Gardai.

Just 10 out of the 400 members of the Restaurants Association of Ireland plan to open for the night. And many pubs and bars have also decided against opening.

Capital Bars, which owns seven bar-restaurants in Dublin is opening just two on the night, Zanzibar and Break for the Border.

"The original plan was to close at 2.30am. We'll make a little less profit but it won't make much difference," said a spokeswoman.
