Newquay turns to video surveillance

A HOTELIER is leading a campaign to install an £80,000 video surveillance system in the Cornish resort of Newquay before the summer season.

Chris Christopheros of the Barrowfield Hotel is chairman of the newly formed Newquay Security Association, which has been set up by local businesses to fight street crime and vandalism in the town.

Mr Christopheros said the monitoring system, which will be linked to the local police station, would make people coming to the town feel more secure.

“It will be good for the image and the future prosperity of Newquay,” said Mr Christopheros.

“It is unrealistic to think we are ever again going to get sufficient police to control crime in the town, and statistics elsewhere in the country prove that one video camera is worth four policemen on the beat.”

Police estimate the bill from street crime in New-quay could be as much as £300,000 a year.
