  • Enterprise Inns bought 183 Swallow pubs from Whitbread for £118m, while Whitbread rebranded the Swallow hotels as Marriotts.

  • Regal Hotels accepted an £88.5m takeover by majority shareholder Malayan United Industries.

  • Stephen Evans, former managing director of Whitbread's BrightReasons restaurants, led a management buy-in team that paid Candover £65m-£70m for the Brannigans bars chain.

  • Hilton International bought the Caledonian hotel from Queen's Moat Houses for £44.2m.

  • Premier Hotels snapped up eight-strong rival budget hotel operator Oriel Leisure for £42m.

  • Bill Holroyd, chairman of Northern pub chain Pernickety Inns, which went into receivership in July, bounced back as one of the buyers of 34-strong London sandwich bar chain Benjys for an estimated £40m.

  • Hanover International absorbed the six Andrew Weir hotels, including the Cardiff Bay hotel, for £33m.

  • SFI bought the Slug & Lettuce chain for £27.7m, then bought Capital Bars' eight UK restaurants and bars for £4.7m.

  • Marco Pierre White bought back the right to use his name independently of Forte hotels for £5m.
