ON THE MOVE
Many applications now require meals to be transported after production, sometimes over considerable distances, and a wide range of equipment is needed to ensure that transport is not only cost-effective but safe within the increasingly stringent UK regulations
THE KEY element in a tailor-made 400 meals/day transport system which centralises meal services across seven Aberdeen hospitals is a range of Thermoport food transport boxes and trolleys made by Rieber. The insulated trolleys use convection heating to hold food at the correct temperature while cold food is transported in separate Thermoport insulated boxes.
By focusing production at a central kitchen and transporting the meals, substantial cost savings have been made without lowering service quality, according to George Reid, Grampian Primary Care catering manager. For ease of handling, the boxes are made in high-grade lightweight polypropylene with special watertight lids to deal with liquid foods. Supplier BGL says that the Thermoport System is flexible enough for meals-on-wheels services, works canteens, restaurants and the retail trade.
