Organic growth

A survey by Datamonitor shows the market for organic food has increased dramatically in the past five years, averaging 14.5 per cent in value terms.

GM ingredients are used in about 60 per cent of all processed foods from biscuits and breads to ready meals and frozen foods. While consumers can easily avoid beef on the bone, the case of GM food is difficult despite introduction of clear labelling regulations.

As a result, organic food is being promoted as the solution to avoiding GM foods. The growth of organic food can clearly be seen in the UK retail market where Sainsbury's sells 20 times more organic products than just three years ago, amounting to sales of £1.5 million per week.
