Would the introduction of ID cards bring benefits to the industry?

It would probably make the whole process of employment a lot easier, especially if you are using casuals for banqueting. I am sure there is a lot of merit in it. In wider terms, it would probably be very useful in curbing under-age drinking in pubs and restaurants.
Christopher Cowdray, general manager, Claridge's, london
From our point of view, it would offer significant advantages. It would enable us to identify staff and make sure we get their employment records correct so we can avoid immigration raids. It is also a quick and easy way to identify guests who arrive unannounced and could present a security risk.
Peter Cashman, chief operating officer, Choice Hotels Europe
Definitely. Security is becoming a bigger and bigger issue when we run big events. We have a state banquet for the President of Poland in May. We have had to send in all the details of all the staff and the rejection rate from the police is something like 20%. Security will continue to be high on the agenda for many years to come.
