Will last week's enlargement of the European Union help ease the UK's hospitality skills shortage?

Inevitably, yes, but there will be challenges. My view as a recruiter is that it will be a very positive force against companies that exist by operating on the margins; the sort that don't follow the law and can instead supply illegal labour at cut-rate prices because they don't have to pay a minimum wage. The enlargement should put pressure on them, making sure everyone is operating legally.

It can only help us. We still have problems recruiting at craft level and the wider the market we have to recruit from the better. We're already looking at CVs from the new EU member countries and a lot of them are very good.

Yes. It will encourage the next generation of "low-skilled, hard workers" to enter the system. The question is, will we wait until they find us, or will we be proactive, establish links, seek the best, give them a reason to be here, treat them well and become a good employment destination?
