Coy picked for whitehall post

Andrew Coy, who left London's Grosvenor House last month after four years as conference and banqueting director, has joined Thistle and Mount Charlotte Hotels.

Mr Coy has been appointed director of One Whitehall Place, a new conference and banqueting centre due to open in the capital in early 1996 close to the group's Royal Horseguards Hotel.

His reponsibilities will include overseeing the building programme, managing sales and marketing and recruiting a team for the venue, which can host receptions for up to 1,250 people.

Mathews on moves up at holiday inn

Ken Mathewson has become director of Holiday Inn Worldwide's Europe and Middle East reservations office (EMERO).

Mr Mathewson has spent the past 16 years with the company, most recently as project manager for a pricing study. He replaces Ann Glover, who is returning to the company's head office based in Atlanta, USA.

Bryan Langton, chairman and chief executive of Holiday Inn Worldwide, is to retire from the company in December 1996.

Raf puts Wood at the controls

Group Captain Steve Wood, formerly a staff instructor, has become director of catering for the Royal Air Force.

He steps into the shoes of Group Captain Martin Armstrong, who has taken up the position of RAF director of the Navy, Army & Airforce Institutes (Naafi) headquarters in Wiltshire.

Burger king picks McDonald's brains

Burger King has appointed a former head of marketing for its deadly rival, McDonald's, as its own head of marketing in the UK.

Samantha Smith, who formerly ran her own advertising agency for seven years, will become involved with plans to open 70 new restaurants this year. Her predecessor, Pat Griffin, has joined a marketing consultancy.

Kitt appointed by supranational

Peter Kitt has become director of reservations operations for Supranational Hotels, based at its head office in London.

Mr Kitt, who was previously systems training manager for CDL Hotels International's three London properties, will have responsibility for Supranational's 24 worldwide reservation offices.

Hammond sets up training company

Nigel Hammond, a former regional director for Forte and university lecturer, has set up a new training company in the West Midlands, which is aimed at the licensed trade.

His colleagues in Quantum Partners include Jack Knowles, one of the earliest members of the British Institute of Innkeeping (BII), and Anita Law, the first woman to be elected a fellow of the BII.

NIGEL PRICE to business development director, National Leisure Catering, from purchasing director. Adrian Mohr joins as purchasing manager.

MICHAEL SIMMS, a former head sommelier at the Ritz, to head sommelier at Claridge's, also in London.

MARILYN HURST to deputy manager, Falmouth Beach Resort Hotel, Falmouth, Cornwall, from corporate sales manager, Penmere Manor Hotel, Falmouth, Cornwall.

CHARLOTTE PARTRIDGE to reception manager at the Cadogan hotel, London, from chef de brigade at the capital's Gloucester hotel.

CHRISTOPHER SMITH to operations director of Barbados-based St James Beach Hotels, from group general manager of Dorset-based FJB Hotels.

CHRIS COCKER to regional catering manager, Yates's Wine Lodges, from Bass Taverns.

REANO MICHAEL to food and beverage manager, Sea Line Beach Resort, Qatar, from restaurant manager, Forte Crest Birmingham.
