Pub Industry Award

01 January 2000
Pub Industry Award

Pubs are, as never before, big business and big news. Our awareness of pubs is constantly being topped up with stories in the financial pages of continuing growth of profits, and outlets are being refurbished or built around us.

We also still drink in them and, of course, we are eating in them more regularly than ever before.

The continuing health of this sector depends on constant innovation, improvement and attention to the needs of the increasingly discerning customer.

Above all else, the sector needs good people in order to realise its potential. The Pub Industry Award is targeted at these very people who are driving this sector of the hospitality industry.

But what is it that we are looking for? While food will of course be an important element of the sales mix, innovative liquor retailing and an ability to exploit legislative changes such as the Children's Certificates are just as likely to impress the judges.

The winner is likely to demonstrate more than just an ability to cope with change.

An illustration of how the changing business environment has been exploited is vital. Working in a pub calls on all sorts of skills: people management, sales techniques, financial acumen, stamina and a good sense of humour are among the many essentials. The winner will demonstrate all of these and more.

The candidates likely to stand out will be able to point to a track record of success with evidence in the form of financial figures as well as praise and recommendation from colleagues.

The candidate may work for a chain or an independent outlet. What the judges will want is evidence of the contribution that has been made to that business. To propose your candidate, please fill in the nomination form on this page.

The judges would be delighted to receive a brief supporting statement (in no more than 200 words) on why you think the person you are nominating deserves the award.

This is the third year for this award and we at Knorr hope readers will give the judges a difficult task with a post-bag full of nominations.
