1. Produced under the Calvados appellation, this is a famous apple brandy. The best is dry, double distilled, aged and originates from the Pays d'Auge region.

2. Amaretto was originally made in Saronno by a friend of the artist Bernadino Luini in 1525. Apricot kernels are the base product of this after-dinner favourite.

3. This is the sweetest of the wines from the island of Madeira, which is also the name by which this wine is known. The liquid is warmed to 45ºC for a period of five months.

4. Also used widely in cocktail recipes and sold in a distinctive bottle, this is Strega. Drink it with a friend and you will stay close for ever, according to another myth.

5. Produced on the Caribbean island of Jamaica, and using a blend of local spices, the highly prized Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is used in making Tia Maria.

6. The Champagne region and the Cognac region are completely separate. The two drinks have no connection. Two of the six Cognac districts are known as Petite and Grande Champagne.

7. Located in the northern region of Portugal where there is good rainfall and the summers are hot and the winters are cold, the Douro is the only producer of port.

8. (c) 36 million. Today the figure is nearer one-third of that. The high point may be due to the change in the bottle shape, which permitted bottles to be laid down.

9. Single distilled, less alcoholic and with greater flavour, having been matured in Monlezun oak casks, this is Armagnac. Produced 200 years before Cognac, it was once used to fortify it.

10. B&B is a liqueur of Benedictine and brandy. Though originally poured in equal proportions by bar staff, the Benedictine company now bottles the mixture.

11. This is the blackcurrant liqueur known as cräme de cassis. As an after-dinner drink it may be mixed with Cognac, but it is often drunk as an aperitif with wine.

12. The loyal toast may well be taken in port although another drink, including water, is perfectly acceptable. It is traditionally passed to the left.

13. In Italy, the spirit made by this process is known as grappa, a favourite tipple in Ernest Hemingway stories. It may be distilled by the pot process or under steam pressure.

14. It is incorrect to have it passed back, as it would then be going in the wrong direction. The correct action is to pass your glass round so that it may be filled and then returned.

15. "Con mosche" means "with flies" - but they are not flies, merely a few coffee beans floated on the surface of the beverage. The drink is often flamed in the glass and should be extinguished before drinking.
