Secrecy clause keeps gag on ex-AA editor

The former editor of the AA Restaurant Guide, whose contract was severed in April, has signed a confidentiality clause as part of the process of settling her affairs with the organisation.

Liz Carter was suspended, along with several inspectors, in the wake of talks of a management buyout of AA Hotel Services (Caterer, 27 April, page 4). Some inspectors subsequently resigned.

Carter, who has also worked with Egon Ronay guides and the Good Food Guide, said the confidentiality clause meant she was unable to discuss the situation at the AA.

Despite the departures, the AA said its 2001 restaurant guide will be published earlier than usual - in the first week of October - and contains a record number of new restaurants.

"We have been busy looking at new restaurants and at restaurants we don't want in the guide any more," said chief hotel inspector David Young. The new guide will feature 270 new stand-alone restaurants, and has dropped 390. Young added that there had also been a 10-15% reduction in the number of hotel restaurants with rosettes.
