It was near the pub that the Battle of Sedgemoor was fought on 6 July 1685, between the troops of the Catholic James II of England and those of the rebel Duke of Monmouth, illegitimate son of the Protestant Charles II. Monmouth's troops were routed at Sedgemoor and his head was lopped off at the Tower of London.
The Sedgemoor Inn is rich in period features, with inglenooks and exposed stone and beams. It has a 32-seat lounge area and a skittle alley-cum-function room offering a further 80 covers. There are two letting bedrooms and two-bedroom owners' accommodation.
