Smollensky's expands

The new owner of Smollensky's restaurant in the Strand, central London, has bought the Capital Radio Café in Finchley Road, north London.

The Mezzanine Group said it would turn the 9,000sq ft former Radio Café, in the O2 shopping centre, into a second American-themed Smollensky's.

The Finchley Road site met the group's criteria for steady and sustained growth of the Smollensky's chain, said Mezzanine.

Smollensky's in the Strand, founded 15 years ago by restaurateur Michael Gottlieb, was bought by the Mezzanine Group from Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries in December.

Gottlieb originally sold the restaurant for some £5m to Marston's brewery, which then fell victim to a takeover bid from Wolverhampton & Dudley.
