Staff call off strike action

Martin's Food Services has scrapped plans to cut the terms and conditions of hundreds of its catering staff at 160 schools in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

A two-day strike in protest at the cuts was averted when Martin's withdrew plans to dismiss staff and then re-employ them with no sick pay and less holiday entitlement.

Peter Martin, managing director of Martin's, and his accountant son, Jonathan, both refused to comment.

Earlier this year Peter Martin said: "If there is no corporate contract, it is unlikely that loss-making schools will be able to provide a hot-meal service, and up to 300 full-time employees could lose their jobs."
