Vegetarians fight back on ignorance
Fed up with having to spell it out to people that "No, vegetarians don't eat fish", the Vegetarian Society this week started a new campaign to improve awareness among caterers and restaurateurs about what vegetarianism actually means.
According to the society, "significant numbers of food-trade establishments" still wrongly believe that vegetarians eat fish.
The Fishconception Campaign, as it has been called, asks customers to put this right by handing wallet-size information cards to misinformed waiters, or leaving them on the tables when they leave.
The cards will detail information about vegetarianism and give chefs and hospitality managers a contact number from which they can receive free advice and recipe ideas.
