Ten ready for Rioja Bursary challenge

Ten sous chefs from restaurants throughout the UK have been selected to compete in the Rioja Sous Chef Bursary 2001 final, which takes place at Hospitality Week 2001 at the NEC in Birmingham.

On Wednesday 24 January, in the Live Theatre at 2pm, the finalists, who were selected last month from their paper entries, will be asked to cook the menus they submitted - a three-course meal for two covers reflecting an international style to complement Rioja wines.

The winner of the Sixth Rioja Sous Chef Bursary title will win a visit to the Rioja region and experience a week working in a leading Spanish restaurant, courtesy of the Rioja Exporters and Wines from Spain.

The finalists, who will have just two hours to prepare their meals, are: Stephen Brothers, Restaurant Michael Deane, Belfast; Neil Foster, Sheraton Park Tower, London; Peter McGregor, the Old Vicarage, Ridgeway, Shropshire; Dominic Noble, Rhodes & Co, Manchester; Glynn Purnell, Simpson's, Kenilworth, Warwickshire; Chris Reeves, the Swan Brasserie, West Malling, Kent; Anthony Rush, Le Champignon Sauvage, Cheltenham; Simon Szymanski, the Windmill Village Hotel, Coventry; John Thorpe, Read's, Faversham, Kent; and Rory Whelan, Hintlesham Hall, Hintlesham, Suffolk.
