The Catey Song
The guests at the year's Cateys were treated to a song especially written for the occasion by hosts Richard Stilgoe and Peter Skellern, here's the lyrics in full…
The Catey Song
By Richard Stilgoe and Peter SkellernEver since we bought the Rose and Crown we've only one ambition
To show our pub's the best pub, and achieve some recognition
We've offered real ale, egg and chips and home cooked local dinner
And we prayed for Egon Ronay while we dreaded Michael Winner
All we want to before our life is through
All we want to do is win a Catey
We did every sort of cooking from Escoffier to Islamic
We did tapas, we did Snappers, all drizzled with Balsamic
But the Catey for best restaurant evaded us again
So we thought we'd take the Rose and Crown and sell it to a chain
All we want to do before our life is through
All we want to do is win a Catey
At the Jerkin and the Firkin we sell Stella by the flagon
And the food all comes from Leicester in an Eddie Stobart wagon
We sell Archer's and Bacardi from eleven ‘til eleven
But we'll ask you for I.D. if we suspect you're under seven
All we want to do before our life is through
All we want to do is win a Catey
We were called the Clinton Arms the year the Yankees bought us out
Then they sold out to Nomura, the Japanese big bank
They named us the Pearl Harbour and we very nearly sank
But we've bought the business back now - we're the Rose and Crown once more
We have matches in a brick and we have sawdust on the floor
And we've hired the very best to make sure this is our big night
Gordon Ramsay's in the kitchen beating up Marco Pierre White
We are ready for you Catey - come on in , I'll take your coat
The red wine jus is waiting underneath the chargrilled goat
This year at last I'll go and get my prize at Grosvenor House
I am goin gto win a Catey - oh bugger, there's a mouse
All we want to do before our life is through
Even though it takes me 'til I'm eighty
All we want to do is win a Catey
