The House in the Tree at Staverton, near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, is a historic real ale pub that enjoys good year-round business. The building, which dates from about 1560, is located in countryside just two miles from Cheltenham and six miles from Gloucester. The pub was given its peculiar name in the 1880s when the then owners had a large house built in the lower branches of a massive beech tree, where thirsty locals would gather to get sozzled on home-made cider. Features include a locals bar, lounge and 70-cover restaurant. Outside, there's a garden seating a further 50, a children's play area, and a large grass area used for functions. In addition there's three-bedroom owners' accommodation. The House in the Tree enjoys a turnover of more than £550,000 excluding VAT, with food and wet trade accounting for 55% and 45% of the revenue respectively. Sixteen of the 20 years remain on the present lease from pub chain Laurel. Agent Bettesworths (01803 212142) is seeking £175,000 for the leasehold interest, trade inventory, and goodwill.
