Time to stop travelling

Question

After I graduated from university with a hospitality management degree five years ago, I decided to work abroad. I have worked three seasons as a hotel assistant manager for a large UK tour operator and then as a unit manager in the French Alps. I have also worked in Greece as an F&B manager and completed three summer seasons on the events circuit, which included running a catering unit serving thousands of people a day. I also have experience in weddings and corporate team-building events. I am currently working in sales at a resort in Colorado.

I am due to return to the UK at the end of April and feel it is time for me to stop travelling around the world. I am thinking that perhaps a post in conference and banqueting or event management in a hotel would suit me.

How can I convince potential employers that I am serious about staying in one place and that my skills are relevant to them and wholly transferable? Also, when I've looked at job adverts for this type of position, they ask for specific experience.

The range of experience you have can certainly be used to start a career in conference and banqueting or event management. Where posts require experience that you don't really have, counter this by writing a very positive and personalised covering letter with your CV and state the reasons you want the job and what you can bring to the role. At interview stage, use your enthusiasm to show the interviewer that you intend to stay in the job for a while. You may also be able to use your network of existing contacts to gain useful introductions. It would be a good idea to join some recruitment consultancies too as this will make things easier. A consultant will be able to advise you on the best way to market yourself and help you find a suitable employer. If you have a question for the experts, click [here to send us your e-mail.
