UK still popular with tourists says survey

As the UK fights to attract tourists in the face of the foot and mouth crisis, the industry can take heart from a new guide that rates England as one of the best countries in the world to visit, along with Italy and France. London as one of the favourite cities, along with Florence and Paris.

The new Zagat survey of hotels, resorts and spas has been based on the views of its 12,000 contributors who consistently gave the highest ratings to properties in Bali, Bangkok and Hong Kong.

Aman Resorts was named as the top international resort chain and its 11 properties in the Far East, Morocco, French Polynesia and Mexico were praised for their high standards.

The 300-bedroom Peninsula hotel in Hong Kong was voted the world's top hotel, while the Oriental in Bangkok was voted second and the Ritz in Paris was third.
