Upgrade for cardiff royal

Jarvis Hotels has embarked on a £5m refurbishment project to upgrade the Royal hotel in Cardiff.

The hotel, which is leased to Jarvis from Cardiff County Council, is to upgrade from three- to four-star accommodation and will reopen in 1999.

Jarvis is now trying to relocate 28 full-time staff that could be without jobs when the project begins next month.

The main feature will be a new restaurant and bar which will aim to attract non-residents. Bedrooms are to increase from 63 to 90. On reopening, the hotel will be staffed by more than 100 full-time workers.

Jarvis director Charles Prew said: "We have been hoping to return the hotel to its former glory for some time. At the moment it just does not meet the quality standards that are expected."
