Using my marketing diploma

Question

I'm a 21-year-old chef qualified up to NVQ2 standard. I was a head chef in a busy restaurant for just more than six months, but I have been out of the industry for two years and am desperate to get back in. I am currently studying for a Certificate in Marketing diploma and would love to use this to get myself into the managerial and promotions side of the industry, possibly in a restaurant or hotel chain. Where should I start and where can I go for a possible apprenticeship role within an organisation?

Changing direction is always a challenge, but can be well worth the effort. Once youÁ¢Â€Â™ve completed your studies, you will have useful qualifications to add to the experience and skills you acquired as a head chef. In order to maximise these, I would suggest you approach larger companies, as they will be able to support your development needs, particularly on the management side. Á‚ It would be worth getting your CV updated and then you can write a personal letter to the larger restaurant and hotel chains outlining the type of position you are interested in. I would include an element of flexibility, so that you can be considered for other opportunities that they might have which may not exactly match your initial thoughts. As an alternative, there are some great recruitment websites, so itÁ¢Â€Â™s worth having a browse and seeing if there are any vacancies for which you can apply directly . Of course, both of these options require some time and effort on your part. If you want someone else to canvass on your behalf, I suggest you register with one of the specialist recruitment agencies. A consultant will interview you and talk to you about the possible openings in your area. You will still need to ensure your CV is up-to-date, but good agencies will normally help you with this and they also have the skills to market you to the types of companies you would like to work for.
