Ventilation experts claim voluntary smoking code is failing hospitality staff
The hospitality trade's voluntary code on smoking, launched last September, is failing to protect staff from fumes, claim ventilation experts.
Ben Goulden, director of the Association of Catering Engineers, said some of the cheaper systems the code suggested, typically using air-cleaners and wall-mounted air-supply/extractor fans, still left staff vulnerable.
Nick Bish, secretary of the Association of Multiple Licensed Retailers, said the code aimed to raise the questions caterers should ask of suppliers. "We are prescribing results, not methods. It is up to engineers and suppliers to come up with solutions."
