Verma takes the title of Indian Chef of the Year

Birmingham college lecturer Veena Verma has beaten seven professional male chefs to take the 2001 International Indian Chef of the Year title.

The competition was held at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh last week. Eight finalists had three hours to cook a four-dish Indian meal.

Verma won the £1,000 prize with a meal of basant bahaar lamb (shanks of lamb in gravy) and tawa chicken (tender chicken with mushroom, peppers and onions) accompanied by two vegetable dishes.

Abu Taher, owner of the Lee Tandoori in Lee-on-the-Solent, Hampshire, took second place. Rois Ali, owner of the Rupali restaurant in Coventry, came third.
