Welcome Break acts on smoking

Welcome Break has extended smoking bans in its motorway service stations. It has done so in response to a survey which showed that this is what the vast majority of its customers want.

Each of Welcome Break's 23 service stations does, however, have a few designated zones for customers who wish to smoke.

Last week the Health & Safety Executive backed the introduction of an approved code of practice concerning passive smoking that could make employers vulnerable to court action by non-smokers.

The restrictions fall short of making pubs and restaurants no-smoking zones. Instead, the executive has asked that they sign up to the Public Places Charter, a voluntary agreement encouraging the creation of no-smoking zones.
