West faces autumn of discontent

CORNISH hoteliers say bookings were down in September and they expect October to be a quiet month.

Hoteliers had hoped business would pick up as holidaymakers who avoided Cornwall in August because of the eclipse returned.

Joy McFeat, owner of the 15-bedroom Stamford Hill Hotel in Bude, said: "September is usually a busy month but this year it has been quiet."

During September, McFeat had, on average, five bedrooms occupied each night. "We would normally expect double that for September," she said.

Other hoteliers also say October will be a difficult month. Keith Underwood, owner of the eight-bedroom Glenside hotel in Teignmouth, said: "October doesn't look as though it is going to be as good as last year."
