WHAT'S NEW? – CEDA AWARDSTHE RACE IS WON

The judges, as always, had their work cut out to decide on the winners because the standard was so high, but they got there in the end. Sponsored by Enodis Distribution, the CEDA Grand Prix Awards really are a benchmark for quality.

Cost Sector Award

BRADFORD & NORTHERN HOUSING & CARING BY AIREDALE GROUP Airedale Group took over this five-site PFI contract for Leeds Mental Health Authority and persuaded the client to bring in a food service consultant, which resulted in a major cost saving. All projects were handed over on time and were snag free. The client said: "I feel that perhaps we gave Airedale Catering a poisoned chalice, in that they had to design and install facilities within a very tight budget, to a very tight timescale within buildings that were already under construction."

Restaurant Sector Award
SHAPES RESTAURANT BY LOOSES Looses were responsible for the conversion of this first floor storage warehouse above Aldiss's Furniture Store in Fakenham into a very pleasing caf‚/restaurant. They were involved in all aspects of the design including carpets, furniture, lighting & d‚cor. The client says that his sales have increased by up to a factor of four over the previous coffee shop and he is well pleased.

Pub Sector Award
DETROIT BAR BY CARFORD GROUP A client who knew exactly what he wanted was a challenge accepted by Carford's. They created a mock-up of the client's premises in their workshop and manufactured and erected the bar and gantries for the client's inspection. After approval, they dismantled everything, delivered to site and erected in final position. Unique features include a bar top in one piece in excess of 20ft long with several, undetectable welds and ingenious stainless steel bar frontage with invisible fixings, yet removable for future under bar maintenance. The bar is the client's delight.

Outstanding Customer Service Award
OLYMPIC CATERING FOR THE FIVE LAKES HOTEL & COUNTRY CLUB IN MALDON A routine call for service to carry out a repair to a 10-year-old dishwasher seemed like a bread and butter matter. But, this was 3 p.m. on the Friday afternoon before Christmas and the hotel was fully booked with functions up to and including Christmas. Tony, the engineer arrived at the hotel, examined the dishwasher, and pronounced it dead! Consternation all round, panic setting in, imagination going wild. How could they cope? In steps Andy to suggest he try and locate a replacement dishwasher. Upshot - a quote by fax from Olympic, an acceptance by the management and Andy was on his way to collect and return with the new machine. The change over was completed and the dishwasher up and working by 6 p.m. Smiles all round.

Contacting the client to meet him on site to discuss the entry, the judge was told: "There has been a fire, everything, including the dishwasher has burned down." It was quickly established this had nothing to do with the dishwasher.

GRAND PRIX CHAMPION

THE SWAN HOTEL BY GRATTE BROTHERS
Hotel Sector Award This hotel is the flagship for Adnams Brewery. Gratte Brothers were awarded the contract in open competition. They designed, supplied and installed a "state of the art" kitchen and all back up facilities, including all building and related work on an all trades basis.

The hotel is a listed building, which presented certain challenges, all of which were faced and solved to the satisfaction of all authorities cocerned.

The finished areas have been transformed in shape, size and function to cutting edge modernity from the 1960's kitchen it replaced. This was accomplished on time, within a significant budget and to the delight of the client and all concerned.

As part of the prize for winning the overall competition, Catering Update will be following a Gratte Brothers installation from start to finish which we will cover in a series of articles over the life of the job.

We will look at the problems that have to be overcome, the trials and tribulations of the build and, finally, the finished installation when it is up and running.
