3663
3663 is one of the best-known brand names in delivered wholesale goods to foodservice. Formed in 1999, the company has four specialist divisions - multi-temperature, frozen and chilled, logistics and catering equipment. Food is 3663's business and indeed 3663 means food when spelled out on a telephone keypad. As well as delivering other people's brands it has its own with names such as Coronet, Smart Choice and Springbourne Natural Mineral Water. 3663 is also Catering Update's partner in the newly-launched Catering Update Excellence in Food and Drink Awards. See page 6 for more news of this exciting venture. 400

Angelo Po High performance and high power are what symbolise the Italian-built Angelo Po brand of prime cooking equipment. At the top end of heavyweight construction, burner supports, work surfaces and body panels are all thicker than the industry standard. The Angelo Po Gamma range is a wide range of individual cooking units which are custom-built into an island suite for the most punishing of heavy-duty cooking demands. 401

apetito For anyone not in the institutional sector of the industry this may be an unfamiliar brand name. Talk to anyone involved in healthcare or social services feeding and it is a brand name symbolising excellence in chilled and frozen meals for this sector. The dietary needs of its core business can be complex, but apetito have the delivering of meals across all dietary and cultural needs as core to their brand strength. apetito also has a thriving fine dining range of ready meals ideal for the upper end of the pub food market. 402

Barry Callebaut One of the big global brands in quality chocolate for the professional dessert kitchen. With a wide range of products, for many pastry chefs the best in chocolate and the brand name Barry Callebaut are one and the same thing.403

Bartlett One of the brand names which is strongly associated with the best in British manufacturing of catering equipment. The Bartlett badge is proudly displayed on prime cooking equipment from combi-steamers to workhorse cooking ranges and the brand maintains a loyal following in UK kitchens. 406

Batchelors A brand name in soups and sauces which gives confidence in the professional kitchen, both in dry mixes and wet cooking sauces. So strong is the Batchelors brand name that it is used on products inspired by cuisines from all around the world.. 404

Bernard Matthews The best-known brand in further-processed turkey products, Bernard Matthew produce many products which don't use turkey, including pork, lamb, fish, chicken and vegetarian. That is why the company refers to its name as a food brand. The Bernard Matthews brand also spans fun food for small children to gourmet products for restaurants. 405

Brakes Think of the name Brakes and for many caterers it means frozen food from a company who only supply the catering industry. Brakes are still heavily committed to delivering the best quality frozen food under the Brakes brand, but they are a comprehensive food company with many sub-brands, ie, Brake Fresh for fresh food and M&J Seafoods for fresh and frozen fish. 407

Brasilia The brand is one of Britain's best-known in the coffee equipment market, respected not just for the quality of the equipment build, but the elegant Italian design of their machines are classic. Brasilia offers a total solution from machine to coffee to full barista training. 408

Bravilor For the smaller operator, the Bravilor brand means a coffee system that delivers high quality without high cost. Best-known for filter coffee systems, the Bravilor brand offers much more, from bulk-brew systems to multi-function machines such as the Bolero and FreshOne. 409

Brita Famous for water treatment whether it is a filter jug or or for eliminating scale problems in combi ovens or coffeemakers., Brita has a massive presence in the marketplace. 480

Britvic It is easy to buy cheap soft drinks, unbranded, unknown and uninviting. What offering a powerful brand like Britvic does is to say to the customer that there is a commitment to stocking on the basis of quality, not on cheapness and obscurity. That is why for many customers to see the Britvic brand is a signal they will enjoy what is to come. 410

Buitoni Italian ingredients are the mainstay of many kitchens with very variable quality available. Poor flours and low egg content are just two of the ways manufacturers can offer a sub-standard product. Professional kitchens that demand quality and consistency rely heavily on the Buitoni brand. 411

Cadbury If asked to name just one chocolate brand from the many available, the name Cadbury would be at the forefront of most people's minds. As eating on the hoof becomes more and more popular, chocolate bars are moving into the foodservice arena. And of course there are Cadbury branded ices and chilled desserts. While the general public associates it predominantly with chocolate bars, in catering it is with top quality chocolate powders that caterers recognise the Britain's biggest chocolate brand, either as cocoa the ingredient or as a drinking chocolate. Don't discount the importance of confectionery at point of sale in your operation. 412

Cambro Among other kitchen products Cambro's Camshelving for any environment has made a great contribution to providing storage solutions for kitchens. They are ideal for walk-in refrigerators and freezers as low as -38°C. 481
Café du Monde
Coffee suppliers which offer a complete coffee system to include a machine loan are not unusual in the area of hot beverage service, but what stands out about the Café du Monde brand is that rather than just one or two machine loan options, there is a machine loan package to suit any business for every type of beverage dispense system, from cafetiére to bulk brewer. 413

Cherry Valley Of the big brands in poultry Cherry Valley is the top name in duck products for the catering industry. The Cherry Valley brand is first choice for caterers who want to offer authentic duck dishes, but have not the skill or time to prepare them. Whole duck, and head-on duck for the UK's Chinese restaurants are also big business for this company.

It says a lot for Cherry Valley in terms of quality that the company supplies breeding stock to China. 414

Churchill The lion which is the logo of this Stoke-on-Trent tableware manufacturer symbolises the toughness associated with the brand. It is a popular choice with those caterers who need to combine appearance and design with the ability to withstand hard use. With Churchill, the chips are in the middle of the plate not the edge of the plate. 417

Cinders Barbecues are a huge profit earner for pubs in the summer, but the guessing game from using makeshift barbecues is both dangerous in terms of food safety and poor at delivering properly cooked food. The Cinders brand is a market leader in professional barbecues and first choice for caterers who care about their food and their bottom line. 418

Comenda
Few warewashing companies have the breadth of product line which Comenda has. From its factory in Northern Italy, Comenda produce dishwashing machines from small under-counter use in bars and small restaurants, to bespoke semi-automatic flight systems capable of tackling the world's biggest warewashing jobs. 420

Convotherm Think of the toughest of the toughest in combi-ovens and the brand name Convotherm springs readily to the minds of many chefs charged with producing high volumes of food on a 24/7 basis. The reliability and performance under the most testing conditions make this a giant brand in combi-ovens. 421

Daloon For caterers, the world of ethnic snack food can be a mystery with obscure brand names from far-flung parts of the world. The name Daloon cuts through that. It is a big foodservice brand with wide recognition in the UK which delivers ethnic snacks which are both authentic and designed and packaged to meet the needs of the foodservice industry. 422
DBC Foodservice From their beginning as importers and distributors of Danish bacon, DBC Foodservice has evolved into a delivered wholesale brand offering national distribution which covers the full range of food needs of caterers, from ambient to chilled with 6,000 product lines and a customer base of 20,000 caterers. 423

Delfin The Delfin range of wipe clean table coverings has long been a favourite with Catering Update readers. Bespoke designs and sizes are available - and no more laundry bills. Enfield Polymers owns this brand. 479

Dolmio Cooking sauces have made a huge contribution to foodservice, delivering the flavours of different world cuisines in a convenience jar. Dolmio is a massive brand in retail Italian influenced cooking sauces, but brand owner MasterFoodServices recognised that the quality the retail market expects from a big brand name such as Dolmio would also be welcome in foodservice. 424

Dudson Dudson tableware is known throughout the world as being wholly dedicated to foodservice and still a family-controlled firm that is based in Stoke-on-Trent. The brand grew to prominence more than 200 years ago. Yet while the potter's craft may be old, Dudson's is producing some of the most modern tableware designs in the world. Dudson can also produce small runs of bespoke tableware for special events such as banquets. 425

Electrolux Rather than just being a brand that sells catering equipment, Electrolux, arguably the biggest catering equipment brand in the world, the company say they sell solutions to the food service industry, with products to meet every need, from food preparation, cooking, serving to washing up. As past of the total solution, customers get planning advice, design, installation, training and service. 426

Elia International This is one of the best known brands in restaurant service accessories, popular with hotels and function suites for the wide range of stylish chafing dishes under the Elia brand. Chafing dishes have not changed in fundamental design for many years, but what the Elia brand has done is to take what is essentially a functional item and design it into an eye-catching table-top service point to grace the best of self-service buffets. It also supplies a huge range of cultery and other service products. 427

Falcon Foodservice The Falcon equipment brand is one of the most popular in Britain, with the Scottish factory turning out product names such as Dominator, Chieftain and Pro-Lite. At the heart of Falcon brand products is prime cooking, with fryers, combi-ovens, cooking ranges grills and griddles just part of its huge range. Falcon's philosophy is that a customer should have confidence that the brand name will deliver consistency and quality. Under the umbrella of the Aga Foodservice Equipment. 428

First Choice While all caterers recognise the profit which can be earned from coffee if they source everything on a piecemeal basis, a growing number prefer to hand over their total coffee requirement to a big coffee brand like First Choice which offers help in selection of the equipment, choice of coffee and staff training Grand Caf‚ is its coffee brand. Foster Refrigerator If any brand suggests a thoroughbred in its class, then the brand name Foster definitely has that message when it comes to refrigeration. Produced in Kings Lynn in Norfolk, but sold all over the world, it is one of the few brands in any area of catering equipment where there can be any doubt that the brand name means as good as you can get in design, build and performance. 430
Garland No prime cooking equipment will withstand constant wilful abuse, but Garland has a fearsome reputation for holding out against door-slamming chefs. The power output of its cooking range gas burners is awesome and the ability of Garland equipment to take punishing use is another legend, all of which combine to make Garland a favourite brand with big busy kitchens. Enodis Distribution is the gateway in the UK for this famous brand. 431

Gram This is a brand hardly known outside of the foodservice industry, but this Danish refrigeration company has one of the biggest brands in the world. Production is in one of the world's most modern refrigeration factories where precision robotics transfer the designers' plans into a refrigeration brand to trust. 432

Heinz Heinz has an enviable reputation with the public for quality of product. It is not just baked beans and tomato sauce, but anything which has the Heinz brand on it makes a powerful statement on quality. From the bottled sauce on the table to a declaration of the baked beans on the toast, the Heinz brand will deliver customer confidence. 433

Hellmann's Another example of a brand from UBFFoodsolutions with a powerful reputation in retail that can deliver customer confidence in catering. There are many cheap, no-name, no-flavour mayonnaises available, but by telling the customer the recognised brand leader is being used shows that quality matters at every level of the business. 434

Hobart Hobart is a leading global player in the manufacture of catering equipment offering virtually everything the professional kitchen could need, from a light-duty food processor to heavyweight combination ovens. The company believes its passion for maintaining the brand reputation of Hobart leads to the setting of tough internal targets and high expectations, which ensure customer satisfaction. 435

Kellogg's Without question the world-leading brand name in breakfast cereals for foodservice, Kellogg's is one of the global brand giants, recognised all over the world. The power of the brand is seen in how so many of its product names are recognised both as the brand and as the generic name for the cereal. Corn flakes is not a protected trade name, but ask any breakfast customer who makes corn flakes and the answer will be Kellogg's. 435

Kenco The foodservice industry is awash with brand names in coffee, but one of the biggest is Kenco. As with many other food products, because the Kenco brand has such recognition in retail, caterers who openly promote their use of Kenco coffees are giving a message that care is taken over coffee choice and the customer is going to enjoy the drink. 436

Knorr There are just a handful of giant brands which enjoy success in both retail and foodservice and Knorr is one of them. From soups to sauces, the Knorr brand on the label is a reassurance that the product is a leader in its category, coming from one of the biggest food manufacturers in the world, UBF Foodsolutions. 436

Lamb-Weston In the world of ready-prepared chips there is a big list of brand names, own-brands and unbranded choices for the caterer, many of them offering poor value for money by the time the chip arrives on the customer's plate. Of the few brand names in potato products which carry high brand equity, Lamb-Weston is a name for quality chips worldwide. 437

Lincat Founded in 1971, Lincat has become one of the UK's leading manufacturer's of catering equipment with more than 400 products. Three brand names are at the core of Lincat's equipment. Lynx is light-duty for the smaller caterer with limited space and tight budgets. Silverlink is the Lincat medium-duty brand with a choice of 150 items covering most catering applications. Opus 700 is the heavy workhorse range, able to withstand the rigours of the most demanding kitchen. 438

Maggi The name has been around in catering for longer than most people working in the professional kitchen, which is testimony of the quality which manufacturers Nestl‚ put into products bearing the Maggi name and the confidence the catering industry has in the brand. 439

Macphie For chefs to make good food they need good ingredients from trusted brands. The brand name Macphie offers that, both in their dry mixes for bakery goods and increasingly in their ready-to-use wet sauces. Macphie is a brand to rely on for staples such as gravies and white sauces, but also for specialities such as cranberry and brandy sauces. 477

Maestrowave Maestrowave from RH Hall, has now become a successful brand in its own right with the assurance of 25 years expertise in the market. The brand now boasts 25 catering products including microwaves, rice cookers/warmers, conveyor toasters, contact grills, food slicers and fly killers. 440

Margett Claims to be the biggest in dessert sauces - with chocolate as the biggest seller. Distributed by Kerry Foodservice. With 80% (AC Nielson) brand share of the dessert sauce market, Margetts Dessert Sauces has retained its industry leadership for good reason! The company has simply combined the finest ingredients with the knowledge and skill of chefs and food scientists working for parent company, Kerry Foodservice, to deliver a range of sauces that chefs trust. 441

Mars A huge brand in confectionery under the protection of MasterFoodServices. There cannot be a person in the UK who does not know and trust this particular brand. Also availabe in ice cream and trails behind it a galaxy of other brands including that old favourite Milky Way. 442

Matthew Walker In the busy run-up to Christmas, very few caterers have the time to make their own Christmas puddings and rely on buying them in from specialist producers. The biggest brand name for caterers for Christmas puddings is Matthew Walker. With dedicated production aimed at every level of catering, from the budget-conscious to luxury individual, it's a brand caterers trust. 443

McCain Ask anyone in catering to think of the best-known brand in chips and few would choose any other name but McCain. One of the two big global brands in frozen and chilled chips and shaped potato products, McCain promotes and protects its brand equity jealously. Potatoes are cut in production at their Scarborough factory, but not corners. 444

McDougalls This has been a trusted brand of dry bakery ingredients in catering for years. It has gone from basic bakery ingredients to complete mixes of desserts and breads that meet the needs of the budget-aware public service sector to those restaurants who want to bake their own bread or pizza base, but prefer a pre-packed form. RHM is the parent company with a host of other well know brands to its credit. 445

McVities See the name McVities and visions of digestive biscuits hove into view - whether chocolate coated or not. It is a comfortable brand with a quality badge which is seen as safe - and delicious. It sits in the United Biscuits Foodservice offering alongside other well known brands such as KP. 446

Meiko Warewashing is the single focus of the Meiko brand. The German factory produces little else but dish and glasswashing systems with the aim to offer a system for every warewashing situation. While small machines get the full Meiko commitment to build quality, it is in the big flight systems where Meiko are at their most impressive, the brand can be found on some of the biggest installations in the world. 447

Millac Maid Ambient single portion milk pots are a feature of thousands of hotels bedrooms, trains and planes, and while the name Millac has little resonance within the customer audience, to operators it is widely recognised as a brand of milk "jigger" which sits above many others by not having the caramelised flavour which some cheap plastic milk pots have. Pritchitt Foodservice is the company behind the name and also produces Comelle ice cream powder, Millac Gold and Chef's Taste stocks. 448

Moffat Moffat is a brand name which signifies quality build across a wide spectrum of catering equipment. Manufactured in Scotland, the brand encompasses prime cooking equipment, but is best known for food delivery and service systems. To those in the healthcare and education sectors, Moffat is a leading brand in regeneration trolleys which are core to cook-chill and cook-freeze systems. 449

Moorwood Vulcan A very British brand of prime cooking equipment with a strong reputation for reliability. Manufactured in the steel city of Sheffield, at Viscount's factory, the Moorwood Vulcan brand is associated with everything to do with cooking, from ranges to combi-ovens, grill, griddles and fryers. Although part of the global Enodis equipment company, so strong is the Moorwood Vulcan brand in the UK it continues to keep a separate identity. 450

Nescafé
Unquestionably, the biggest brand name in coffee, not just in the UK, but in the world. Buying into such brand power means the caterer has to just put one word on the menu, the coffee machine or the vending machine and customers know they are going to get a taste they recognise and enjoy. The Nescafé brand generates sales.

Padley Brands have always been strong in poultry and when it comes to brand recognition in added value chicken products, none is more prominent than the Padley brand. Products carrying the Padley brand range from fun finger foods to speciality restaurant items and all carrying a brand name in chicken the caterer can trust. 452

Parry Plus This is one of the newest equipment brands to become available. It follows a decision by well known, long established equipment manufacturer Parry to offer more to customers by sourcing equipment it did not manufacture itself, but met the standards Parry set and could have the Parry brand name. 453

PG Tips While the use of chimps to advertise the brand in a humorous way was dropped many years ago, PG Tips remains a brand which people feel warm to. The emphasis today on the brand marketing is reassuring a commitment to continuity and reliability in flavour through careful blending in a product where crop flavour varies hugely from year to year. Another brand in the UBF Foodsolutions portfolio. 454

Quaker The brand name Quaker has almost become a byword for porridge in the past 100 years since it launched. Along with the Scott's Porage Oats brand, which is also owned by Quaker, there are no other brands of breakfast oats so readily recognised. 455

Quorn Meeting the protein needs of vegetarian customers has always vexed caterers, but Quorn is a non-animal protein source with a brand strength which delivers both the nutritional need of the customer and the reassurance that a market-leading meat alternative is being used. Quorn on the menu adds brand value to the meal choice for vegetarians. 456

Rational
It is highly unusual for a global manufacturer of catering equipment to have just one brand and one product, but that is what Rational is. Rational is widely credited with inventing the combi-oven in 1976 and today the brand is one of the most recognisable in the world for combi-ovens. Not least because Rational ovens have a massive 44% share of the world's combi-oven market. 457

RobotCoupe
When the brand name becomes a generic word for a type of machine - such as Hoover for a vacuum cleaner - then that is the sign of a powerful brand name. That is where Robot Coupe sits in the area of food processors and blenders. Chefs will openly talk about "robot-couping" when they mean chopping puréeing or blending. 458
Rowlett
While you can get toast in international hotels around the world, it is a breakfast item traditionally associated with Britain, and the toaster brand which is part of that tradition is the Rowlett. With its retro chunky design, it is both functional and funky, popular across the whole scope of catering from the tea shop to the country house hotel. The brand was born in a shed at the bottom of Ted Rutland's garden in the 1950s and is still going strong. 459

RoyalGreenland
Think "quality prawns" and "brand leader" and Royal Greenland is the conclusion for caterers. No other seafood has such variable quality in size, ice-glazing and flavour. The Royal Greenland brand is a reassurance that only minimum ice glaze is added, no additives are used and the flavour is unbeatable. 460

Rubbermaid Whatever you need for your housekeeping andkitchen needs be it waste disposal, shelving or trollies, Rubbermaid has the solution. Gastronorm sized plastic storage boxes under the brand name Dur-X are a recent addition to this company's extensive range of practical, hygienic products. 482

Scanomat In soluble coffee dispense machine, one of the most popular systems is Scanomat, for which Balmoral are the UK distributor. Designed for ease of use and compactness, often in situations where volumes are not high and demand is steady rather than in peaks and troughs, Balmoral are now offering brands within a brand with Nescafé, PG Tips and Liptons-branded machines.

Silvercases Display cases for hotels and restaurants are often the silent marketeer attracting customers in. The quality of the case has to reflect the quality inside, which is why the Silvercases brand has remained so popular in the 40 years it has been around. Not just menus outside the front door but internal signage all adds to the image of the hotel. 461

Simon Jersey The challenge for workwear manufacturers is that while the fine dining restaurant may want uniforms which make table staff seem invisible, the funky city centre restaurant or bar wants something that shouts out funky fun. That is where the Simon Jersey brand of workwear has established itself, able to offer the sublime to the just short of outrageous. 462

Steelite This is one of the big brand names in ceramic tableware in Stoke-on-Trent with an output dedicated to the needs of foodservice. Its heritage goes back a long way, but it has one of the most modern tableware factories in the world, able to produce tough vitrified crockery for the rough and tumble of heavy use and fine china for the upmarket restaurant. 463

Tetley There are several one-brand, one product companies within catering equipment, but very few in food. Tetley is one, a tea brand as strong in the retail market as it is in foodservice. Caterers know that by advertising their tea brand of choice is such a big household name, a message is being sent that quality of ingredients begins with one of the simplest things a customer can order - a cup of tea. 464

Tilda While the Tilda brand was originally a signal of the very best quality in rice, it has now moved on to indicate quality in cooking sauces. While sub-continent rices and cooking sauces remain the foods most strongly associated with Tilda , the Essex-based company now extends its commitment to brand quality to rices and sauces from around the world. 465

Tudor Tudor Tea and Coffee is a brand name strongly associated with a complete coffee system, bean to cup in its broadest sense. When a caterer selects the Tudor brand as the preferred supplier of roast and ground coffee, a top-quality, Swiss-built Franke automatic coffee machine comes on free loan. Nor does signing up to the Tudor Tea and Coffee brand end there, as there is a wide range of point of sale material and free servicing. and don't forget the compnay's tea ofering. 466

Twinings As a brand name, Twinings is inextricably tied to quality tea. While there are strong brands in heavily blended teas for everyday drinking, Twinings has always had that extra cachet as a sign that the caterer is offering something a bit special. The brand was established on teas such as Earl Grey, English Breakfast, Assam and Darjeeling, but Twinings are now a huge player in the herbal infusion market. If it carries the Twinings brand, customers trust it all around the world. 467

Ty-Phoo Immediately associated with one of Britain's favourite tea brands and a reassurance of quality when a customer sees it on the menu or on the individual tea bag at breakfast. The price difference in buying unbranded and unloved tea and a market leader says buying big tea brands is business sense. 468

Uncle Ben's Its heritage as a brand name may be in the US, but Uncle Ben's is long-established as a UK brand which delivers quality into foodservice. There is a wide range of products under the Uncle Ben's brand name, but for caterers, the two biggest brands are in the rices and the cooking sauces. The rices range from the convenience of par-boiled long-grain or fragrant varieties from India and Thailand. The cooking sauces span Tex-Mex to Chinese, but all have the security of the Uncle Ben's brand name. From MasterFoodServices. 469

Valentine Whenever a catering equipment company specialises in one piece of equipment, it inevitably becomes a brand associated with that form of cooking. That is what has happened to the brand name of Valentine and deep-fat fryers. Like many single product equipment manufacturers when a caterer is offered Valentine as an option for a deep-fat fryer, they recognise it as a known and trusted brand. 470

Victor Manufacturing The serving of food from dispensing trolleys, food holding trolleys, fixed and mobile serveries is what the brand name Victor Manufacturing is synonymous with. Products include Caribbean and Jamaican counters, Sorrento display cabinets and Banquetline. And the compnay makes bespoke, too. 471

Viscount Catering Equipment Home of the Sadia cooling range, Moorwood Vulcan, Jackson boilers, and Henry Nuttall fish frying ranges- all well known brands in the UK foodservice industry. This company is a rare breed nowadays - a British manufacturer making quality steel products. Viscount is part of the Enodis stable and is based in the heart of the steel industry - Sheffield. 472

Weetabix As a branded breakfast cereal, Weetabix is one of the strongest names available. It has imitators and some of the copiers produce a good version of Weetabix, but nothing carries the same brand impact. There is no moment in the waking day when a customer wants the reassurance of a trusted food brand than breakfast. Wheaty Biskies describe a product, but Weetabix describe both a product and a marketing-leading brand. 473

Westlers The biggest brand name in hot-dogs eaten out of the home, Westlers is also one of the oldest with more than 40 years in the UK catering market. The benefit to the caterer of such a powerful brand is that hot-dogs are very much an impulse purchase and to see a familiar food name used on the menu board is reassurance for a customer buying a product of very variable quality. 474

Williams In refrigeration, there are scores of brands on the market, many of which are obscure with no public pedigree by which to judge them. A name that all caterers immediately recognise is Williams, built in the refrigeration capital of Britain, King's Lynn in Norfolk. The Williams brand offers the standard refrigeration units, but also specialist fridges for blast-chilling and tempering back up to de-frost. The compnay also offers a very different option in glycol based refrigeration which makes for a quieter, cooler kitchen. willimas is part of the Aga Foodservice Equipment group. 475

Winterhalter When it comes to the number of dish and glasswashers supplied in the UK, Winterhalter say they are the UK's top-selling brand. Customer confidence in the name comes in a large part from the total service customers know they will get from Winterhalter, from pre-sales advice to after-sales training. That comes with a product range which is able to cover small single-rack under-counter machines to automatic modular systems capable of washing up to 220 racks an hour. 476
