Details of the Peninsula London revealed
The development of one of the world's oldest luxury hotel brands in London's Belgravia has moved a step closer, after plans were submitted to Westminster City Council.
Located on Grosvenor Place, overlooking Buckingham Palace and adjacent to the newly relaunched Lanesborough hotel, the £500m, 190-bedroom Peninsula London is expected to open in 2021.
Details of the hotel's development first emerged two years ago when Grosvenor Britain & Ireland and the Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels (HSH) announced a 50:50 joint venture partnership for the development.
Designed by British-based Hopkins Architects, the new-build hotel will replace an existing 1960s office block. The plans include details of up to 28 apartments within the development.
The property will feature a grand pedestrian entrance on Grosvenor Place, accessed from a colonnade linked to a palazzo-style inner courtyard, which will allow guests to be dropped off in cars. It will incorporate a spa, restaurants, bars, shops and a ballroom.
Peter Vernon, chief executive, Grosvenor Britain & Ireland, described the creation of the new hotel as "an exciting opportunity to shape a very special corner" of London.
"For over 300 years Grosvenor has carefully curated its London estate in Mayfair and Belgravia and the Peninsula London is another important step in our journey. This high-quality development is sensitive to its surroundings, sustainable and will support around 2,800 jobs in the wider economy."
Clement Kwok, managing director and chief executive of HSH, added that the Peninsula London will be "an exciting addition" to its global network of 10 hotels in Asia and the USA. Founded in 1928 with the launch in Hong Kong of the first Peninsula hotel, HSH opened its first European hotel in Paris in August 2014.
The five-AA-red-star, 93-bedroom Lanesborough hotel officially opened its doors to guests again on Wednesday, following a 19-month renovation, costing £60m plus.
Gerald Eve is advising the joint venture partners on the planning of the Peninsula London.
