Edinburgh to get top-class youth hostel

A new upmarket youth hostel concept will open in Edinburgh next spring.

The 132-bedroom Edinburgh Smart City Hostel will open in Blackfriars Street in the city's old town as part of a £10m development.

The project will see the conversion of an existing five-storey 13,000sq ft property and a six-storey extension in to 50,000sq ft of adjacent land.

A spokesman for the project said that it hoped to gain five-star status from VisitScotland.

When the students are in residence, the hostel's capacity will be 256 beds. When their 81 bedrooms are vacated during holiday time, this will rise to 620 beds.

The spokesman added: "The deal provides guaranteed revenue throughout the year, while freeing up space when demand is high."

The charge per night will be about £16 including breakfast.
