Swallow Hotels spends more than £4m on Newmarket hotel

Swallow Hotels, the hotel division of London and Edinburgh Inns, has bought the Rutland Arms hotel in Newmarket for close to the asking price of £4.2m.

The 15th century former coaching inn is built around a cobbled courtyard in the High Street of the horse-racing town in Suffolk, East Anglia.

The three-star property has 46 en-suite bedrooms, the 60-seat Saddle Room restaurant, the Nell Gwynn bar and the Wolverton Room, which can provide private dining for up to 50 diners or hold up to 70 people theatre-style.

The Wolverton Room is one of four function rooms at the hotel.

The Ipswich office of Christie + Co handled the sale of the freehold property on behalf of previous owner Peter Hobday, who acquired the hotel in 2000.
