The Marksman team to open National Theatre restaurant

The team behind the Marksman pub in London's Hackney are to open a restaurant at the National Theatre on the South Bank in May.

Jon Rotheram, Tom Harris and John Ogier have teamed up with Kerb, which has overseen the food and beverage offer at the theatre since 2021, to open Lasdun.

The trio met while working at the St John restaurant in 2008 and Rotheram and Harris opened the Marksman in 2015. It was named the Michelin Pub of the Year in 2017.

Ogier is the co-founder of Michelin-starred Lyle's in London, and Lasdun is the first project for the trio.

The 90-cover restaurant will serve some of the Marksman's signature dishes, including seasonal pies to share, and a new take on its brown butter and honey tart. Grilled chops and baked whole fish will also feature on the menu, and the entrance to the restaurant will feature a marble oyster counter with cured smoked salmon and smoked eel on display in a bespoke fridge.

The restaurant will seat 90 diners and a central bar will offer cocktails, wines and a menu of small plates and shellfish.

Lasdun takes its name from the National Theatre's architect Denys Lasdun and the team hope to "reinvent traditional notions of theatre dining".

It has been designed in collaboration with the Guild of St Luke to incorporate the existing brutalist aesthetic and reinstate some of the original features with added elements of wood and brass.
