Torquay hotel fire treated as ‘possible arson'

A fire that damaged the ground floor extension of a hotel in Torquay is being investigated as a "possible arson".

Fire crews were called to the hotel in Belgrave Road at about 6.30am yesterday (Tuesday 12 March).

A room was destroyed in the fire while the rest of the extension suffered 75% fire damage and 100% smoke damage. The fire was extinguished by 1.30pm.

A room-by-room search of the property was carried out and Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed no injuries have been reported.

The hotel has not been named by emergency services, but the BBC and local media reported that it was the Sherwood Palm hotel.

Police have said the cause of the fire is being treated as possible arson and a police investigation is ongoing.
