Borough Market restaurant Turnips forced to close

London restaurant Turnips has said it will close next week after its licence to operate was revoked by the trustees of Borough Market.

The team said it brought them "great sadness" to announce the site would close on 25 April.

Chef Tomas Lidakevicius launched Turnips as a pop-up at the Borough Market greengrocers of the same name in 2020, and it became a permanent fixture in 2021.

It was praised by critics and restaurant guides for its creative, vegetable-focused fine dining menu served beneath the railway arches of the market.

A post on the Turnips Instagram said: "It is with a great sadness that we write to you today.

"The Borough Market trustees have revoked the licence for restaurant use and as a result we will be forced to close our restaurant on the 25th of April.

The post added: "The journey has been incredible for us, we want you all to know that it has been our greatest pleasure to be able to look after you. We have felt the love and support at every turn.

"Our hope is we went some way to showing you what heights the humble vegetable truly can reach."

The Caterer has contacted Borough Market to clarify the reasons behind the closure and the future of the Turnips greengrocer.
