Anchor's away as petrol problems scuttle pub plans

The fuel crisis and petrol prices are being blamed for the closure of a pub in Dorset.

Owner Goodbars has spent thousands of pounds refurbishing the Anchor at Shapwick since it bought the inn 18 months ago.

Goodbars had intended the Anchor to be the first in a chain of village pubs offering quality food throughout rural Dorset.

But Goodbars managing director Richard Ward explained that business had failed to pick up since the September petrol blockades kept customers away. High fuel prices have also hit hard as customers had to drive to reach the out-of-the-way pub.
