BBC's Hotel programme poised for new series

Controversial BBC TV documentary programme Hotel seems set to return for a second series.

The BBC has confirmed that negotiations are taking place between programme-makers and the owners of Liverpool's Britannia Adelphi Hotel, although nothing has yet been finalised. Nobody at the Adelphi or Britannia Hotels was available for comment.

A statement about the series' future is expected shortly, and in the meantime the BBC is showing two special episodes, - featuring programmes from the first series plus additional footage. The first went out on Monday (20 April); the other will be shown on 27 April.

If a second series on life at the Adelphi does go ahead as planned, it is likely to get a mixed reaction from the hotel trade. Caterer received a large number of critical calls and letters about the original eight-part series when it was shown last year.

David Friesner, general manager of the Donington Thistle Hotel at East Midlands Airport, said he felt "embarrassed, saddened, frustrated and angry" after watching the programme, while the European Catering Association expressed "dismay at the portrayal of our industry."
