Vintage sherry makes history
TO apply the word "vintage" to sherry is almost a contradiction in terms.
In the process of continuously blending wine of different years, the solera system, every vestige of vintage is lost. The emphasis is on style and consistency.
So it was a historical event when last month Gonzalez Byass launched two Olorosos in the UK, labelled Finest Dry 1963 and Finest Dry 1966 at a special sale at Christies.
The vintage sherry became available as Gonzalez Byass had put aside a few butts which it kept outside the solera.
All 69 cases were quickly sold to buyers from all over the world at prices averaging £44 a bottle.
