Chefs move to stamp out kitchen violence
Chefs and kitchen staff suffering abuse from their employers are being invited to reveal all to the UK Council of Chefs (UKCC).
Some members of the UKCC, an umbrella body made up of 12 chefs' associations, fear violence has become a way of life in many kitchens and want to see it stamped out.
Other members believe the issue may have been exaggerated in the past and want to hear from those that have suffered physical or verbal abuse to get an accurate picture of the problem.
"Kitchens can be hostile environments, with the heat and the pressure. For some people it may have become just part of their working day," said UKCC spokesman Peter Griffiths.
"We would like to think it is minimal, but there are not enough facts to decide if it is going to be an issue for the UKCC."
The question was debated by the UKCC last week at its fifth meeting, held at the Emlyn Arms hotel, Newcastle Emlyn, in west Wales.
"Chefs' associations expect their members to conduct themselves in a correct and professional manner. The industry in general needs to address the problems that may be responsible for violence," the council said in a statement.
Anyone involved in the industry who is experiencing abuse can contact the UKCC in the strictest confidence by calling John Retallick on 01239 710317.
