Compass seeks £8m for Wheeler's

Compass Group is selling its chain of Wheeler's fish restaurants, along with a handful of wine bars, in a disposal expected to garner more than £8m.

The Wheeler's chain is made up of six restaurants in London and one in Brighton.

The other properties for sale are two Eatons Wine Bars, the Dickens Inn at St Katherine's Dock and the Issimo restaurant in Lime Street, all in London, and the Kings Head in Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire.

The wine bars and restaurants were part of Compass's Select Service Partner (SSP) division, which mainly provides catering in sites such as airports and railway stations. Proceeds from the sale will be reinvested in developing new sites for SSP.

Christie & Co, which is handling the sale, is asking for offers by 12 April. The properties may be sold individually, in groups, or as a single package.

Granada, which owned Wheeler's before the merger with Compass, looked at selling the chain in 1998, but then decided to hang on to it after all, saying that the brand name could be used to open seafood bars in sites such as airports.
