Doormen praised for quick fire action

Two doormen have been praised for fighting a fire that threatened to spread through a busy hotel and nightclub.

The blaze broke out in the Royal hotel, in Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear, shortly before 10pm last Friday.

The fire, believed to have been started by an electrical fault in a second-floor bedroom, triggered automatic smoke detectors.

The doormen used fire extinguishers to hold back the flames, while staff dialled 999 and evacuated about 30 guests from the 50-bedroom hotel, plus customers from the bar and dance area.
