Eddie the Eagle's old school is to become a four-star hotel

Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards's old primary school in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, is to become a four-star hotel.

The Olympic ski-jumping hero was a pupil at Dunnalley Street Primary School a quarter of a century ago.

Last Thursday (15 November) Cheltenham Borough Council gave the go-ahead for developer Pine Hall to build a 91-bedroom hotel on the site of the 150-year-old school.

The hotel, which will include restaurant, lounge, bar, conference facilities and parking for 100 cars, will employ 75 people and cost several million pounds to develop.

The school was moved out of the Victorian four-storey building in 1998 to new purpose-built premises.

Edwards, who revisited his old school shortly before the move, said he never got into trouble there but still quaked at the memory of his old headmistress, who had been "a very intimidating woman".
