European beer is back

Following a decline in consumption of 2.4% to 307 million hectolitres, the European beer market is predicted to grow in 1994 by something like 1%.

The revival is partly explained by the heatwave across northern Europe in July. In 1993, the two largest beer markets - Germany and the UK - fell by about 2% and Benelux and Spain by almost 5%.

In 1993, Germany accounted for 37.1% of the European beer market and the UK 18.6%. The Dutch-based Heineken headed the list of top brewery groups, with the UK's Guinness and Bass in fourth and fifth place respectively.

The figures are drawn from Bath-based Zenith International's latest report, Europe's Top 100 Brewing Companies. It costs £990. More information from 0225 422050.
