Five-star first for Northern Ireland

Hastings Hotels is to upgrade the Culloden Hotel, at Holywood, North Down, in a bid to become Northern Ireland's first five-star hotel.

"There are 16 five-star hotels in Eire, but none in Northern Ireland, so we are trying to get five stars at the Culloden," said group sales and marketing director Julie Maguire.

"Everything has been moving since the peace process started. Though the business may not be here this year, enquiries are vast for 1996. A lot of people are travelling up from the south."

Philip Weston, director and general manager of the 92-bedroom Culloden, added: "There is a market for a five-star property - we are getting more Americans, more people who could pay five-star prices."
