FSA survey results eagerly awaited

School caterers will be eagerly awaiting the Food Standards Agency's latest research into school meals, which is due out this summer and could lead to new guidelines.

The first study is being carried out in nurseries and primary schools, and examines good practice related to a "whole school" approach to food and nutrition. It was looking at every aspect of feeding including vending, tuck shops, water provision and school meals. The survey started in autumn 2003 and should be completed soon.

The second study looked at whether food provided at school lunches in secondary schools in England complied with the statutory nutritional standards that were introduced in April 2001.
