Greenwich launches recruitment drive for school kitchens

Greenwich Council in London is holding a recruitment day in an attempt to woo more people into its school kitchens.

The event, which takes place tomorrow between 8am and 3pm at Woolwich Town Hall, will provide information on school catering jobs. Suitable candidates will be interviewed.

The initiative aims to build on the work begun by Jamie Oliver in his TV programme Jamie's School Dinners.

During the four-part series the celebrity chef introduced fresh food to 6,000 Greenwich schoolchildren. Local residents are now needed to help roll out the service to as many as 28,000 kids.

Chris Roberts, leader of Greenwich Council, said: "We are keen to attract more people to work in our school kitchens, helping with the vital work of improving the health and educational achievement of our children."

There are vacancies at several schools and pay rates range from £6.94 per hour to £7.24 per hour.
