Hard Rock merchandise sales still weak

Food and beverage sales at Hard Rock cafés around the world continued their recovery during the four months to 2 November, owner Rank Group said today.

"Like-for-like sales comparisons have, as expected, improved against last year when sales were significantly impacted by the events of 11 Septembber," the company said in a trading update.

But sales of merchandise in the Hard Rock cafés remained weak, especially in major tourist destinations.

Rank's gaming division, which includes Mecca Bingo and Grosvenor Casinos, performed better, benefitting from the gradual liberalisation of gaming legislation in the UK.

A new Hard Rock Casino will open in London later this month.
