John Miller, general manager of the Royal Derwent hotel in Allensford, County Durham, has died at the age of 54 from cancer. His career in hotel management spanned more than 30 years after he started at the Strand Palace hotel, London, in 1971 as front office manager.

He later became food and beverage manager at the Thistle Tower hotel and then moved to Birmingham as deputy general manager of the Albany hotel. For a brief time he managed four hotels in the Scottish Highlands before Trusthouse Forte Hotels invited him to manage the Coventry Posthouse and the Edinburgh Posthouse. He then moved to the Albany hotel in Glasgow, where he was general manager for five years.
