Hotels win Which? honours
More than 40 hotels have been selected by consumer group Which? as Hotels of the Year in its 1998 hotel guide under 14 new categories.
Among those praised for its bedrooms was the Devonshire Arms in Bolton Abbey, North Yorkshire, while the Mount Royale in York and London's Gore hotel were given superior city-base status. Best budget options were the Bodkin Lodge in East Barkwith, Lincolnshire, Cheshire hotel Tilston Lodge, and Coombe Farm in Widegates, Cornwall.
Highlighted under the quirky character sector were Raemoir House in Banchory in Scotland and the River House in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire. Guesthouses dubbed superior B&Bs by the guide include Paradise House in Bath and Drummond House in Edinburgh.
Noted under the glorious grounds sector was the Carwinion hotel in Mawnan Smith, Cornwall, and one of three best family-friendly hotels was the Evesham hotel in Hereford.
There were four "notable new entries": Number 31 in Carlisle, Cumbria, the Bear hotel in Crickhowell, Powys, Lea Hill in Membury, Devon and the George hotel in Yarmouth, Isle of Wight.
